A Note from Mrs. Kull

Hello River Heights Academy Families!!

Thank you for all of your time and commitment to helping our students have a fantastic start to the 2020-21 school year! I know that adjusting to a fully remote schedule has been an adjustment, but our students handled it like pros! Thank you for your patience and grace as we have adapted and adjusted. We have only just begun and I can't wait to see all of the progress our students will make this school year.

Beginning this Wednesday, teachers will be holding "Listening Conferences" with each family for about 15 minutes. These are brief phone calls or video chats where you can share all about how fantastic your child is, what your goals are for them this year, and any ways that we can support them in being successful. Thanks in advance for your time and sharing about your child with us. We look forward to partnering with you for their success.

As we work out all the kinks of online learning, please help us by assisting your child in learning their own strategies for problem solving issues! You'll be amazed with how much they can handle on their own when we let go of the reins! An old phrase in education says, "The person doing the work is the one doing the learning." Student voices and student thinking should be at the forefront of our virtual time together. We teach our students that mistakes are what help them learn. Thank you for providing a safe space for teachers and students to make mistakes as we learn together in this new environment and get better every day.

We appreciate the warm welcome into your homes and understand that real life is being lived while your child is in their online classes. We expect and are prepared for signs of life including some background noise, younger siblings, pets, etc. One thing we have found to be helpful is having your child use headphones with a mic during their lessons which greatly reduces background noise for everyone on the call.

An area we could use some help in is keeping profanity out of our online learning spaces. Believe me, I understand the frustration when a login isn't working or something goes wrong! Thanks for keeping things G rated for little ears. I appreciate your understanding and help with this.

As we continue our partnership together, please refer to some problem solving tips for common issues below:

- If you have trouble logging on to Zoom with your child's school Google account information, try these steps for logging in as a guest: https://help.distinctiveschools.org/hc/en-us/articles/360053710073

- The Distinctive Schools Help Center is available if you run into any other issues. You can submit a help ticket at https://help.distinctiveschools.org

- Call the school office at (734) 379-6810 or email your child's teacher or Mrs. Kull

- You can also message us on our official Facebook page

You are a valued part of our school community. Please do not hesitate to reach out, we are happy to assist in any way that we can.

Have a good one!
Mrs. Kull
